Using the U.S.-Canada boundary as an example to illustrate the surveying issues that can arise with any treaty, discussion explores first, why it took 59 years to put a map line on the ground (1783 – 1842) and second, why this particular boundary is so important to society today, and its effects on two countries. A review of several of the most important U.S. treaties is included, both international and national in scope.
