GeoLearn CEO Joe Paiva Takes the Stage at Trimble Dimensions User Conference 2023!
On Monday, November 6, our CEO Joe Paiva captivated the audience at the Trimble Dimensions User Conference in Las Vegas. Approximately 65 surveyors attended the session. The spotlight was on Joe as he delved into the Top 10 Areas Where Errors and Blunders Can Occur While Surveying With Advanced Technology. The premise of his talk was that “black box” technology tends to limit access to many important areas that surveyors are required to monitor, set or select as they design field processes, collect data, process it, and generate information for customers, their data users. Joe encouraged that surveyors retain awareness of the things that are often set or selected for them automatically to have more involvement in the completeness and accuracy of what is delivered. There are many sources of errors in a surveying system and surveyors do not consider all of them. But, with selections being made for them, not monitoring the settings and options can result in blunders as well. Finally Joe encourage more complete understanding of the technology being used and to not accept the features at face value, as in the end, it is the surveyor’s (or his firm’s) liability that is at stake.
Key Takeaways:
- Joe shed light on common pitfalls, emphasizing the critical need for accurate meta data, especially concerning datums and projects.
- A cautionary note was sounded about relying too heavily on out-of-the-box solutions within the realm of advanced surveying technology.
Bonus Insight: Joe went beyond the 10 areas identified in the title of the talk and also shared crucial insights on the often-overlooked practice of miscounting independent baselines when employing GNSS to measure a network. While easily rectified, this aspect is not regularly taught to surveyors today using this technology.
What’s Next? Stay tuned for an upcoming continuing education course from Joe in our online catalog in the next few months. Building upon his Dimensions presentation, Joe plans to enrich the material with additional insights, references, and links to invaluable sources for managing errors and blunders.
