This course covers the Approved Monumentation section of the Standards (which weren’t included in Part I). Examples and illustration of the types of monuments are provided. While the definitions of controlling and exterior corners were covered in Part I, a little more illustration is provided in this course. A few concepts from the condominium law (Chp 448 of RSMo) are presented although it is not intended to supplant thorough study of that section of the statutes. A more detailed discussion of systematic and random errors follows with examples of these types of errors. Blunders are also discussed briefly as it is the surveyor’s responsibility to remove them from the field data before doing any calculations or analysis. A brief discussion of the concepts used to assess Positional Uncertainty are covered and calculations to assess the precision requirements in parts per million (PPM) are given with worked examples. We conclude with a discussion on independent measurements and some information on what the 68% confidence level is and how a surveyor may state the confidence level of their work.

Objectives:

  • Understand the specifics of Monumentation Approved by the standards
  • Learn how to apply the definitions of controlling and exterior corners on a boundary survey
  • Derive a few concepts from the condominium law
  • Refresh the learner’s understanding of errors and blunders and how to eliminate or reduce them
  • Understand the theoretical elements of how positional uncertainty is determined
  • Learn through worked examples the equivalencies of PPM and relative precision
  • Get tips on how to determine positional uncertainty and precision requirements
